[14 JAN 99] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Armed Robbery In Stratford

Warwickshire police are hunting two raiders who carried out an armed robbery on a Stratford shop.

The men made off with cash from the Spar shop in Evesham Road, Stratford after threatening a shop worker with a handgun at around 6.45pm last night. The assistant was unhurt but deeply shocked by the incident.

The first man brandished the nine-inch handgun at the man forcing him to hand over an unspecified amount of cash before both men fled.

The first man is described as a white, in his 20s, 5ft 10ins, of average build with a dark coloured hat, a scarf across his face. He was wearing a blue and white anorak with dark trousers.

His accomplice was 6ft 2ins tall with ginger hair and a goatee beard. He was wearing a black hat and a dark bomber jacket. Police say he seemed nervous during the raid.

Anyone with any information or who might have witnessed the getaway should contact DC Ian Mathews on 01926 415000

The robbery follows two armed raids in Coventry on Tuesday. A man tried to rob Lockhurst News in Lockhurst Lane but ran off when the assistant refused to open the til.

Four customers and two members of staff were held hostage when two men burst into the Victoria Wine shop in the Westmeade Centre, Winsford Avenue, Allesley Park at 7.05pm.

No-one was hurt but the men escaped with cash and cigarettes.
