Pensioner Dies After Burglary

A pensioner collapsed and died after finding his home in Radford, Coventry had been ransacked.

A police hunt is under way in Coventry to find the heartless burglars who robbed the 87 years old man and his 85 years old wife while they were out yesterday afternoon. The couple were later identified by police as John Anthony Wycherley and his wife Doris. They lived in Middlemarch Road, Radford.

Mr Wycherley discovered the burglary when he climbed the stairs to switch on the electric blanket at around 9 pm. He found drawers and wardrobes ransacked and belongings strewn across the floor.

Three hours later he complained of chest pains and was rushed to hospital but the medical staff could not save him. He died shortly after midnight.

It is believed a quantity of jewellery was stolen. The police are anxious to trace an Irishman who knocked on a door in Middlemarch Road asking for someone who did not live at that address. He walked off down the street.

Detective Sergeant Steve Francis, who is leading the inquiries into the robbery said:

"This is one of the saddest incidents we can remember. We are appealing for anyone with any information to telephone the police urgently."
