[21 AUG 00] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Eight More Arrested After Gun Fired In Street

Further arrests have been made by Rugby police following a fight where shots were fired in the street on a housing estate last week.

An armed operation yesterday brought eight more people into custody and police still want help to catch more people involved.

Three people already arrested have been charged with offences including: violent disorder, possession of an offensive weapon and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. They are from Leicester and Matlock and are appearing before magistrates in the town today.

And an armed police swoop over the weekend led to the arrest of six men and two women.

They were apprehended at a hotel near the town on suspicion of firearms offences. Police will not name the location.

None has yet been charged and no weapons have been recovered. The woman have been bailed, and the six men remain in custody awaiting further questioning today

Police have renewed their appeals for public help to find out more about the fight in Seathwaite, off Ennerdale, in Brownsover on Thursday evening when residents called the police after hearing gunshots.

One man was detained in hospital with head injuries after the fight. Although shots were fired, his injuries were not gunshot wounds.

Det Ch Insp Richard Sear, leading the team of 20 officers in the investigation, said:

“A major inquiry is underway into the incident in Brownsover when firearms were discharged

“We are also looking at recent incidents of violence which we believers are connected.

“We need to identity all those involved and recover firearms or other weapons
