[29 NOV 00] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Hunt On For Rail Beer Keg Vandals

Yobs put the lives of rail passengers in Coventry at risk when they put a beer barrel on the track and caused the train’s brakes to seize up.

The keg was put on the line near Coundon Road and struck the 22.10 from Coventry to Leicester.

The train was forced to stop after the brake pipes were damaged. Engineers were called to the scene and spent an hour fixing the train before it was allowed to go on its way.

About 20 passengers were on board the train last Friday evening.

A Railtrack spokesman said they were told to wait and were eventually taken to their destination

British Transport Police say they are hunting the vandals responsible for the incident, which could have had far more serious consequences.

Anyone who knows who is responsible, or who saw anything, should call 0800 405040.
