[22 DEC 00] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Grandmother Punched As Pension Is Robbed

A Coventry grandmother was punched in the face as a robber stole her Christmas pension money.

Gladys Carradus was attacked near her home in Starley Road in the city centre at 12.45pm.

The attacker punched her in her the face, causing her to fall to the ground. She suffered a broken top set of teeth, a broken bone in her right eye and a badly swollen and bruised face.

The-71-year-old also had her handbag containing her £78 pension stolen.

Concerned detectives at Little Park Street police station have organised a collection to replace the money, and are appealing for witnesses.

WDC Theresa Fraser said:

“This was a vicious attack where a totally unnecessary amount of violence was used. Somebody must have seen this offender running from the scene as he headed off towards the ring road.”

The assailant is black, aged about 20, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, a three-quarter length anorak-type coat with a hood. Witnesses should ring 024 7653 9000.
