[03 JAN 01] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Coventry Woman Struck With Iron Bar

A 59-year-old Coventry woman was hit with an iron bar and dragged across a street by a robber who stole her handbag.

The attacker struck between 6.50pm and 7.10pm yesterday when he approached the women from behind in Holbrook Lane, near Everdon Road.

He demanded that she hand over her bag, but she refused and crossed the road and called for help.

The assailant followed and produced an iron bar. He hit her on the arm and grabbed the bag and pulled at it.

The woman, who comes from Coventry, was dragged across the road before finally losing her grip.

Her attacker fled down an alleyway towards Pembroke Close with the black leather-effect handbag. It contained a green purse, which had just £8 in it.

The woman suffered bruising, a cut and swelling to her right arm, cuts to her hand and a graze to her knee.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. The robber is white, aged between 20 and 30, 5ft 6ins. He wore a white or grey hooded top and a dark woolly hat.

Anyone who has any information should call 024 7653 9020.
