[06 MAR 01] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
Armed Robbery Spree Continues In Coventry

Police are looking at the possibility that a spate of armed robberies across the city could be linked following a series of attacks on small stores.

Many recent attacks have taken place in the Earlsdon and Spon End area of the city and have featured men with similar descriptions threatening staff with a knife.

Last week there were four armed robberies and a street attack, and yesterday police released details of four more incidents.

The latest offences involve a robbery at Chapelfields General Store in Sir Thomas Whites Road, Chapelfields at 9.30pm on Saturday.

Two men entered the store and one of them threatened the 51-year-old male serving in the shop with a six-inch kitchen knife. The other man grabbed between £30-50 cash from the till and both of them escaped.

The first man is white, 5ft 8ins to 10ins slim with short brown hair, and was wearing a black fleece top, black jeans and gloves.

The other man had brown or black hair, aged 20-40, slim, wearing waist length black anorak and dark jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 024 7653 9030.

And a man with a stocking over his head threatened a member of staff at Victoria Wine in Albany Road with a kitchen knife on Sunday at 9.20pm.

The offender walked behind the till and grabbed cash and phonecards before escaping.

He is white, 6ft, slim, in his late 20s or early 30s and wore a green tracksuit top with stripes on the sleeve and had light tracksuit bottoms.

Witnesses should call 024 7653 9040.

The attacks happened after man with a knife and a stocking on his head raided a post office in Spon End and a supermarket in Radford in Saturday and Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said:

“We are looking at the possibility that they might be linked, but it is too early to say that for definite.

“There have been quite a few incidents in Coventry lately. There were several late last week and and we put three or four out yesterday.”
