[21 MAR 01] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
City Robbery Suspect Appears In Court

A Coventry man was in police custody today after being arrested on suspicion of a spate of armed robberies at shops in the city.

Coventry magistrates today agreed to allow the police to keep him in custody until Saturday morning while further investigations are carried out.

The 28-year-old was arrested shortly after an alleged armed robbery at Victoria Wine in Albany Road, Earlsdon, on Monday at 9.35pm.

Detectives arrested a man shortly after the incident, during which staff were allegedly threatened with a knife.

They today appealed for people to look for items that may have been discarded by the suspect.

DS Terry Mosey said:

“We are appealing to anyone who finds a box containing packets of tens and twenties of cigarettes, a hat, a scarf, a body warmer and dark green hooded top to contact police so we can carry out forensic tests.”

He added that the suspect would also be interviewed about similar robberies at shops in the area.

Anyone who can help should call police on 024 7653 9082.
