[29 MAR 01] CRIMES, FIRES & ACCIDENTS
City Shops Shut As Suspect Car Found

Army bomb disposal experts were called to Coventry for the second time in under a month after a suspicious car was found parked in the city centre.

The abandoned vehicle was left outside the West Orchards Shopping Centre with its lights on.

All the shops in the centre and in buildings connected to it were evacuated as a precaution. Hundreds of staff had to wait outside while the incident was dealt with.

Bomb disposal experts were brought in to assess the situation.

Police warned people coming into the city centre today that there could be severe traffic delays.

UPDATE: The cordon was lifted shortly after 9.30am when the owner of the car was traced.
