[10 AUG 99] MARCONI COMMUNICATIONS PRESS RELEASE
Marconi Coventry Strengthens Position In The Billion Pound Australian Mobile Phone Market

Marconi Communications will supply Siemens Australia with the latest in SDH technology for its turnkey contract with Vodafone.

This significant breakthrough into the £1 billion Australian mobile market covers Marconi's Series 3 transmission equipment and the company's management system.

The Series 3 is the latest offering in Marconi's Coventry-built SDH product range. Vodafone will be one of many operators to deploy this technology which will form a critical component of the company's mobile network.

Mike Parton, Coventry-based managing director, Marconi Communications, said:

"We are delighted that Siemens has awarded this contract to Marconi, which reflects our presence in the Australian marketplace, and further strengthens our position and presence in Australia as a leading supplier of SDH technology."

With sales to more than 90 operators in over 60 countries, the company is a global leader in SDH solutions. At present Marconi Communications products are deployed with operators such as BT, KPN, Deutsche Telecom, Telecom Italia and C&W amongst others.

This order comes less than two weeks after Marconi announced it had signed a multi-million dollar contract with Siemens to supply Telstra, the Australian telecommunications network operator with the latest SDH technology.

The contract covers Marconi's Series 3 synchronous multiplexer family, EM-OS and the SDH extender and follows the successful conclusion of the five year contract during which Marconi, via Siemens, provided Telstra with key SDH and management products.

Marconi Communications is a wholly owned subsidiary of GEC, a world leader in smart broadband optical networks, access equipment, switching technology for the Internet and network integration.

GEC's recent acquisition of US-based FORE Systems has positioned the company to be a leading player in the new public network and enterprise markets in addition to its established market leadership in the carrier and operators sphere. It has sales to more than 140 countries, a major presence in Europe, the USA, Africa and the Asia-Pacific Region.
