Atherstone Track Faces New Speed Limit
BY ANTONY HOPKER

Trains travelling through Coventry and Warwickshire face delays because of yesterday’s train disaster at Hatfield.

Railtrack has slapped a 20 mph speed restriction on similar sections of track throughout the country.

The high-speed bends will have the new limit on them until the exact source of the accident, in which four people died, is determined.

With trains having to spend some time slowing down, travelling slowly through the affected area and then gather speed again, it will add several minutes onto all journeys.

Trains on the West Coast route between Coventry and London will be affected because there is a stretch at Leighton Buzzard included in the new restrictions.

And trains passing through Warwickshire will also be hit because of a similar limit imposed on track at Atherstone.

A Railtrack spokeswoman said there would be delays, but the company hoped to lift the speed limits “as soon as possible”.
