[07 JUL 99] SPON END FORUM PRESS RELEASE
Just Four Days Until The Spon End Wakes Festival

SATURDAY 10 JULY 1999, 10am - 5pm

The Spon End Wakes will be resurrected this Saturday after being in abeyance for over 100 years.

The Festival has been brought back to life in time for the Millennium and is being organised by the Spon End Forum - an umbrella group for a host of residents groups and voluntary organisations in the Spon End area.

Colin Walker, Chair of the Forum, said:

"The area has a strong sense of identity and this Festival will be an opportunity for Sponenders and others to shout about our area and how unique it is," he went on "local people have achieved a lot in this area over the past 12 months and now this is our chance to celebrate this."

The Festival will be largely for children and will centre around a grand procession of children from Spon Gate and St Osburgs schools. The procession will leave from Upper Spon Street at 12.30pm. The procession will been seen off by the Deputy Lord Mayor and will be led by Pru Poretta as Lady Godiva.

Attractions will include a funfair, the Crusaders Basketball team, fetes at Spon Gate School and Koco Nursery and a multicultural event at the Grapevine Centre.

There will also be events at local pubs including a fairground, music, bonfire and Beer Festival at the Malt Shovel, music and barbecue at the Dyers Arms and a disco at the Butts Retreat. At 2pm there will be a history walk around Spon End led by local historian, Mark Cook.

[THIS IS AN ARTS INITIATIVE SUPPORTED BY COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL]
