Design Awards 2001
Coventry Design Awards
are held every two years to reward design excellence in the
city. The awards are a locally based initiative which give
the people of Coventry an opportunity to nominate good examples
of design that make a significant contribution to the
environment of the city.
A key aim is to raise the profile
of urban design as a method of creating a high quality
environment whilst recognising that good quality and design can
help make a better, more positive city for everyone to enjoy.
DESIGN AWARDS 2001
The programme kicked off in October with a launch in the
Coventry Evening Telegraph and the distribution of leaflets
around the city.
A six week period followed where people were invited to
nominate good examples of design in the following categories:

New Buildings
House, factory, shop, school
2 Renovation
An improvement to an existing building
3 Environmental
Improvement
Park, woodland, public squares and highway schemes
4 Accessibility
Schemes that improve access for disabled groups
5 Lighting
External lighting of a building, street lighting and
lighting of spaces
6 Household
Extension
A new conservatory, kitchen, extension etc |
To qualify all entries had to be located within the City
Council boundary and to have been completed between October 1999
and October 2001. The closing date for nominations was Friday 12
October 2001.
RESULTS AND AWARDS
Over 50 nominations were received under the six award
categories.
The nominations were judged by a panel consisting of local
architects, residents, councillors, designers and other interest
groups within the city.
The results were announced at the awards ceremony on 7
December 2001 and published in the Coventry Evening Telegraph,
and here on CWN.
