[24 MAY 04] ROLAND SMITH : KILLED IN THE BLITZ
My father was killed in the Blitz of Coventry just 3 months before I was born. My mother never talked much about it.

I am now researching my family tree and I am beginning to find out quite a lot but have some gaps.

My dad's name was Roland Smith and he was a corporal in the Home Guard. He was Canadian by birth. He and my mother lived at 2 Dalton Square. He was only 27 when killed on 9 April 1941. I only know it was at Greyfriar's Green shelter.

Does anyone know of any newspapers or other sources of information I can obtain?

[23 MAY 04] LOOKING FOR CAROL & JACKIE BYRNE
I have not seen my two sisters for over 18 years - they live in Wyken but I do not know the school they attended.

Their names are Carol and Jackie Lloyd or Byrne and they had a younger brother but I do not know his name. Confused you will be!

I cannot locate them so if they do look at this web site please would they contact their sister Kim.

[19 MAY 04] WOODFIELDS FROM COVENTRY?
It is said that my Great Grandfather came to the US from Coventry in the late 1800's. We have no records of that crossing, or any information regarding our family from those days in Coventry.

I met a 'Woodfield' who came from Tazmania and he told me that his family also came from Coventry, and immigrated to Tazmania at about the same time.

Is Woodfield a common name around Coventry? And is there any information regarding an exodus around 1840-1875? I understand most of the old records were destroyed during WW II and it is very difficult to obtain information.

Thank you for your help!

[18 MAY 04] MEMORIES oF MOSELEY AVENUE SCHOOL
I attended Moseley Avenue Infants and Junior School and then went to Barkers Butts Secondary Modern School.

My time at Moseley Junior was (I think 1960 to 1965). I remember the headmistress Mrs.Barnett (who I think smoked cigars!) and my teacher in the last year Mr John whose wife also taught at Moseley.

[07 MAY 04] EVACUEE CHILDREN FROM FOLESHILL SCHOOL
Whilst studying the 2nd World War with my class of 7-9 year olds, we discovered an old school admissions book. We were very interested in several entries for December 1940.

Three brothers arrived at our school as evacuees. They came from Foleshill C of E school in Coventry. Their names were Wilfred Greenhalgh (age 9) Noel Peter Greenhalgh (age 4) and John Stanley Greenhalgh (age 7).

Our School is in Halifax, West Yorkshire and we have the enviable position of being in the beautiful Shibden Valley. The school is Salterlee School.

The brothers were billited to 50 Brow Lane, Shibden and spent 2 years at the school. They returned to Coventry in January 1942.

The current children at Salterlee are really keen to try and trace some of the children who were evacuees at our school in the war and I wondered if anyone would be able to give our young historical detectives any further information.
