[09 JUN 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Allotment Success

Leisure services are announcing the success of the Allotments promotion which they undertook earlier this year at the meeting of the Sports and Parks Policy Team on Thursday 10 June.

The promotion offered allotments free for the first year to people who applied before the end of April 1999, along with a free information pack containing a number of useful items including free seeds. The aim of the promotion was to highlight the benefits of allotment gardening including the health benefits from regular exercise, fresh food and the opportunity for personal and social development.

The City Council began with over 600 vacant plots throughout the 53 sites at the beginning of January and are pleased to announce that we now have over 150 new plot holders.

Councillor Dave Edwards, Chair of the Sports and Parks Policy Team said:

"I am thrilled that the allotment promotion has been such a success and that demand was greater than we originally expected. We now have 150 Coventry people feeling the benefits of having an allotment to grow their vegetables on. The key to this success will be to evaluate how many of these people sign up again for next year!"
