[27 AUG 99] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Excellent Examination Results For City Pupils

Coventry schools have recorded the best ever examination results this year, and a rate of improvement faster than the national improvement.

  • The percentage of pupils achieving the higher A* - C grades has increased dramatically by 2.5%.

  • 39.5% of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs and vocational qualifications at the higher grades A* - C. This exceeds the target set for Coventry by the Government.

Also, the number of pupils leaving school with national qualifications at GCSE level has significantly increased. Well over 90% of Coventry pupils now achieve qualifications at the level of GCSE.

In addition, some pupils, particularly those with special educational needs have achieved other nationally recognised qualifications. The City is on line to meet the national targets to improve the number of pupils achieving nationally recognised qualifications.

More pupils are now taking vocational qualifications alongside their GCSEs. They have been particularly successful. The results exceed the national results by approximately 20%.

Cllr George Duggins, Coventry City CouncilCouncillor George Duggins, Chair of Education and Cultural Affairs PCC, says:

"I am very pleased with the results this year. The increase in pass rates, and the increase in the number of young people gaining qualifications in Coventry schools, is excellent. We have not only met the very challenging targets set for us by the government but have exceeded these targets.

"These results demonstrate what can be accomplished in a city that is committed to providing a high quality education for all our youngsters. They are testimony to the hard work of students, teachers and parents and I add my personal congratulations on behalf of Coventry City Council to all concerned."

NOTE:
Coventry results show the percentage of pupils achieving 5 or more A* - C and 1 or more A* - G grades. National statistics will not provide this level of detail until November. Today, they merely show the pass rate in relation to the number of examinations entered.
