[07 AUG 98] COVENTRY CITY COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
600 More Hotel Rooms For Coventry

More than 600 more hotel rooms able to sleep more than 1,500 people look set to open in Coventry.

Planning applications have been submitted for new developments and for expansions to existing facilities at a number of locations.   Early discussions have also taken place with regard to a new hotel at Friars Road.

Cllr Nick Nolan, Coventry City CouncilCouncillor Nick Nolan, Chair of the Economic Regeneration Policy Team, said:

"The prospect of 600 new hotel rooms is great news for Coventry.  And the plans, which include more than 400 rooms in four brand new hotels, are a clear indication that, like us, major investors believe Coventry is on the up.   As a city we are proving that we have got what it takes.  Companies recognise that we have everything they need to thrive and grow and we are continuing to develop a strong reputation as a city with a bright future."

The new hotels - two on Parkside Technology Park, one on Coventry Business Park and one on Friars Road will offer a range of accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets, the business traveller and the tourist trade alike.

On Coventry Business Park there are plans to develop a 4.25 acre site as a 98 bedroom hotel including leisure facilities, catering and conference facilities, fitness and beauty centre.  The leisure and restaurant facilities would be open to the local community and it is expected that more than 100 full-time and 50 part-time jobs will be created.

On the Technology Park at Parkside there are plans for two new hotels: an 85 room 'IBIS' Hotel and an 86 room 'FORMULE 1' Hotel.  The two hotels would cater for the differing needs of the business traveller and visitors planning to spend one or two nights in the city.

As further confirmation that Coventry has got what it takes a further 183 rooms, at some of the best known hotels in the city, are already open or set to open within next the few weeks.
