[18 NOV 98] GEOFFREY ROBINSON MP
Geoffrey Robinson Apologises To The House

Geoffrey Robinson MPCoventry North West MP and Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson has apologised to Parliament for failing to register company directorships.

Mr Robinson, one of the richest and most powerful politicians and a key economic advisor to the Prime Minister Tony Blair, said he had in no way attempted to use his position as a Member of Parliament to aid his commercial interests.

The Committee on Standards and Privileges criticised the former Jaguar chief for failing to register the fact that Stenbell Ltd - a company he owned shares in - acquired a rights issue of 9,805,550 shares in another company, TransTec, from him.

Stenbell then sold the issue to the Orion Trust, of which Mr Robinson was a discretionary beneficiary.

A complaint was made on the matter by former North Warwickshire MP Francis Maude, now the Shadow Chancellor.

Mr Robinson told the House of Commons:

"The oversight for concerning registration, for which I apologise is entirely my responsibility."

Tony Blair reportedly now considers the matter closed but opposition MPs are again calling for Mr Robinson, who used to be a director of Coventry City FC, to resign.

Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Heathcoat-Amory said:

"The Paymaster General must resign today. He has now been strongly censured by the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges.

"Even the Prime Minister's closest cronies cannot be immune from the proper standards expected of ministers and members of the House of Commons."

Mr Heathcoat-Amory added it was the third complaint against the minister the committee had upheld.
