[25 NOV 98] STRATFORD ON AVON DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
'TOPS' For Sport In District

Stratford District Council are working together with the Local Education Authority and local primary schools to develop after school sports opportunities, known as TOPS.

The TOPS scheme is a National Lottery Funded project administered by the Youth Sport Trust.

The District Council's youth sport development officer, Hayley Smith, manages the TOPS project in a rolling programme of schools across the District. By the year 2001, every primary school in the District will have the opportunity to become involved.

The first group of schools, in the north-east of the District have benefited from sport and play sessions ranging from basketball and rugby to hockey and multi sport sessions. A total of 200 children are currently involved.

The next group of schools to start on the project will be in the Southam area, where Southam Secondary school have also made their hall available free of charge to contribute to the scheme.

Children are not the only ones to benefit from the scheme. Sports leaders and club coaches across the District can apply to receive TOPS training, developing their individual skills and enabling them to access TOPS equipment for their sports club or youth organisation.
