[03 AUG 98] WARWICK DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
Cash Help For Flood Repairs

First indications from Central Government are that they will be contributing £85,000 towards repairs to public buildings, parks and other assets in Warwick District.  Damage to the Jephson Gardens, St Nicholas Park paddling pool and York Bridge in the Pump Room Gardens are amongst the items on the list for which Government have agreed cash help.

The Chief Executive of Warwick District Council, Jamie Barrett, said:

"I am pleased that the Government have made a contribution to the repairs and clean-up.  The money will go some way towards covering the costs which will otherwise fall upon the Council and its taxpayers."

The Council have estimated its total bill to be £565,000.   This includes about £169,000 which is covered by insurances, £75,000 which is loss of income at the pools and sports halls, £95,000 is to be spent on Council tenanted property and in the long term it is felt that £74,000 may be needed to be spent on the Town Hall because of subsidence.

Only certain costs would be considered by the Government's, "Bellwin" Scheme, and the Council were claiming about £125,000
