City Already Hunting New Midfield Star

Gary McAllister might have left Highfield Road regardless of his offer from Liverpool, because Coventry City are lining up the signature of a top central midfielder, according to chairman Bryan Richardson.

He said the club was already looking for another top-class central midfielder to strengthen next season’s squad.

He said:

“We were planning, even if Gary had stayed, to strengthen in that area.

“It does not make any difference to us at all that he’s gone.”

Richardson added that he was not surprised to see McAllister leave after Gerard Houllier offered him a contract.

He said:

“He had been here for the four years of his contract.

“It’s probably the only club and the only opportunity he would have taken to move on.

“He was very clear that Liverpool were interested. It was a chance for him to play in the European competitions.”
