[29 DEC 01] COVENTRY CITY MATCH REPORT - DIVISION ONE

Nottingham Forest (0) 2  Coventry City (1) 1

spacer
Coventry put another dent in their promotion hopes after letting slip an early lead at Nottingham Forest.

City started the match with only four substitutes on the bench. Nilsson, for the first time since become permanent manager, named himself in the starting line-up but then picked up an injury during the warm-up. Quinn took his place on the pitch, with Edworthy becoming captain for the day.

City dominated much of the first half and Chippo put them deservedly ahead on the half hour mark.

The tables turned after the break and Forest came back strongly. They equalised from the penalty spot after substitute Lester was brought down by Safri.

Summerbee got the winner for the home side with a superb strike from a free kick after Fowler had fouled Williams just outside the D.

Summerbee went from hero to villain for the Forest fans 10 minutes when he was sent off for a second bookable offence.

City however failed to make the extra man count. Despite good chances for Mills and Chippo they good not the ball in the net to salvage a point from the game.

Coventry have now drifted to 8th in the table, 7 points behind leaders Burnley. Both Burnley and second place Manchester City have a game in hand over Coventry.

City need a good win against Rotherham at Highfield Road on New Year's Day to put them back in the hunt for a play-off spot.
