How does Gordon Strachan compare
to Coventry City’s other managers?
In the last 34 years only two
men, Gordon Milne and Noel Cantwell, have had longer spells as
manager of Coventry City than Gordon Strachan.

The ginger-headed Scot led City
into 183 league games - Milne had 378 games in charge and
Cantwell 186.
When you compare the records of
City’s 15 managers during the period since they entered the
top flight Strachan’s record does not impress.
One benchmark that can be used to
compare the performance of managers is the percentage of league
games won. Strachan’s record is 28.4% which is bettered by the
majority of his predecessors in the manager’s chair.
Only Ron Atkinson, caretakers Don
Howe and Bob Dennison and Jimmy Hill, in his brief Division 1
career whilst waiting for Noel Cantwell to arrive, have a worse
record.
Even so-called failures like Phil
Neal, Terry Butcher, Bobby Gould and Don Mackay won a greater
percentage of games than Gordon.
On a general note, it is sad to
observe that none of Coventry's managers have managed to break
the 50% win barrier, and only one, George Curtis, managed to
keep the team's goal difference in a positive balance.
