Derrick Pope Joins The Crusaders

The Coventry Crusaders are pleased to announce the signing of Derrick Pope, a 6' 6" guard/forward who has played top division basketball in France for the past 14 seasons.

Derrick will be one of the keys to the Crusaders turnaround this season, and with his skills the club will move back to the top of the Division One.

1979-83 University of Montana
1983 Drafted by the Portland Trailblazers
1983-84 Played in Scotland on Team Glasgow
1984-85 Played in Scotland on Team Falkirk
1985-90 Played in France at CEP in Lorient
1990-92 Played in France at NBC in Nantes
1992-97 Played in France at COB in St Brieuc
1997-99 Played in France at BCM in Gravelines

Derrick has averaged over 20 points per game over his basketball career. He is strong enough to play inside and quick enough, with a great outside shot to play outside. His all-round game will really be a boost to our players and our strategy for winning.

Derrick will be employed by the Crusader Foundation as Director of Basketball Operations which will cover the Community Development Programme and the Schools Coaching Programme. He will also head up the development teams, and coaches for each development team.

Crusader owner, Dip Donaldson says:

"Pope shares the same vision that I have for basketball in the city, and being a father, he understands the needs of young people. I am really looking forward to having his valuable contribution to our ‘team’.

"Derrick is the best player I have ever signed here in Coventry, the team will be looking to his leadership skills as the way forward for us to win."

Derrick, and his wife Shari and their five children will be moving Coventry, from their current home in Grande Fort Philippe, France to join the Crusader organisation toward the end of this month.
