Pope Gives Crusaders His Blessing

As the Coventry Crusaders head into their Christmas break, captain Derrick Pope has given his verdict on the season so far.

He said:

"This year has been kind of like one of those white boards that you write on and then wipe off, and write on it again. It has been fun and interesting, and constantly changing.

“At the beginning of the season we had Adam Stevens here, and then we accumulated Todd Sands. Then one by one they left.

“We had one player after another come down with injuries that kept several players sidelined, and then they returned.

“We acquired the services of our third American for the season, Marvin Harrison - and so the writing has changed again.

“The nucleus of our team has remained our constant factor in all of this. We have changed navigators a few times, but our boat and our course has always remained the same.

"With the constant change we have dropped a couple of games that we shouldn’t have. I think we should have been higher in the league than we are by now. But the good thing about it is that we, as players, are becoming more in tune with each other all the time.

“I am confident that things will be better in the second half of the season. Harrison has been here over a month now and is settling in, most everyone is back off the injured list, and players are growing more comfortable in the roles assigned to them.

"It has been a fun season for me. I am enjoying it. I think the more pleasure you get out of the game the more confident you become as a player and I believe that is what is happening with the guys on the team. I can’t wait until we get started again.”

The Bupa Coventry Crusaders go into the Christmas break with a 5-3 record. The much needed rest has come at a good time as players continue to recuperate from niggling aches and pains, and as they rest up from their early morning training schedule.

The team ended on a high last week, beating Inter-Basket London who had previously won two out of three encounters with the Crusaders.  It came as a positive statement to the team that things definitely are on the up and up for the Coventry side.
