VS began brightly against the promotion chasers, but they saw
their lead slip away despite creating several good scoring chances.
Brian Agar opened the scoring for Rugby with a spectacular overhead kick in the 10th
minute and he was denied a second by a brilliant save from goalkeeper Andy Fisher.
Newport grabbed an equaliser in the 35th minute against the run of play when
Jason Donovan headed home a corner kick.
Agar should have restored Rugby’s lead almost immediately but he scooped wide with
the goal at his mercy and within three minutes VS fell behind.
Dean Clarke rifled home from the edge of the penalty area and from then on the chances
dried up and Rugby slid to their seventh home defeat of the season.
