[10 OCT 98] RUGBY LIONS MATCH SUMMARY
Walefield (7) 22 Rugby Lions (20) 26
[ALLIED DUNBAR PREMIERSHIP TWO]

Rugby Lions recorded their second victory of the season after a run of four defeats, but they almost let the Yorkshire side off the hook.

Lions should have been home and dry by half-time when they had a thirteen points lead. But Wakefield won the second half 15-6 and came within one point of Lions' total, but Martyn Davies saw his side home with an injury time penalty goal..

To'o Vaega made two of Rugby's three first half tries. The Western Samoan international flung out a long pass in the 9th minute to send Paul Bale crashing over in the corner and Davies converted from wide out.

Bale thought he had scored a second try after 21 minutes but the tough judge flagged for an infringement and the score was disallowed.

But Lions were well on top and six minutes later Vaega sliced through to send Adrian Gillooly over near the posts, although Davies missed the easy conversion kick.

He was back on form shortly after however when he slotted over a penalty goal. Wakefield hit back against the run of play and Phil Ure converted Alex Birby's try, but in the run in to half-rime Rugby's Paul Thompson forced his way over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Wakefield came strongly in the second half and scored two tries as they battered at the Rugby defence. Dean Morgan relieved the pressure with a neat dropped goal, but in the end Lions were glad of Davies' stoppage time penalty goal to notch victory.
