Arena Bid To Lure Ice Hockey

Coventry’s SkyDome Arena is casting its net across Europe to find a team that will bring top competitive ice hockey to the city.

The 4,000-seat arena is offering a side the chance to use its state-of-the-art facilities as home territory when it opens later this month.

It is already fully equipped with an in-house box office, hi-tech media centre and large dressing room facilities.

Arena manager Simon Burnett has launched the search to find a suitable team to play under the SkyDome banner and admits there are no boundaries to how far he will look.

He said:

“It could be a side that are already playing in the Midlands and are looking for better facilities or it could be a European side looking to bring their talents to a British audience – we are open to all suggestions.”

“The idea of the arena is to bring the best of everything to people in the area, whether that be the rink for their own recreational use or high profile events to view.

“The excitement that has been generated by the arena and its facilities has meant that we have already attracted the England international basketball team, and we are now looking for an ice hockey side to follow suit.

“We know that people in Coventry and Warwickshire are itching for the rink to open and there is a great enthusiasm for skating in the area.

“Hopefully we will find a top ice hockey side to make their home here so that people can have a go on the ice and then take a seat and watch how it should be done!

“As well as attracting a team to play here, we are also hoping to host ice hockey tournaments and have already held discussions to that end.”

The arena opens for public ice skating during Easter week.
