Over
100 jobs in Coventry could be in jeopardy after the announcement that Co-operative Retail
Services has sold off its Walsgrave based Homeworld store.
The Coventry Homeworld is part of a package which has been sold to Chartwell Land, the
property arm of Kingfisher plc.
The Cross Point Business Park store will run as normal for around the next three months
while Chartwell Land "review its possible uses".
A spokesperson for Co-operative said that all staff at the Coventry store had been
informed of the decision "at a specially convened briefing".
The 103 workers who are employed at Walsgrave must now wait to see whether London
retail giants Kingfisher will use the site to grow one of their national chains.
Kingfisher spokesperson Jo Bootle said:
"It is far too early to talk about jobs, It may be that Chartwell Land keep the
Coventry site for their development portfolio or it could be passed on to Kingfisher.
"In Edinburgh, as an experiment we are opening an out of town Big W
store which is a spin-off from Woolworths but has a broader product range to provide
a comprehensive facility.
"If that was successful and the Coventry site was the right size and location to
continue the project then that would be a possibility."
Kingfisher plc are one of Europes leading retail companys with Woolworths,
B&Q, Comet and Superdrug amongst the big names that come under their banner.
The sale by Co-operative Retail Services completes their move out of all non-food
retailing after the recent sale of their 40 living department stores.
The company now wants to concentrate on their food and funerals businesses that are
both represented in Coventry.
