A
Coventry nightspot that was left in limbo after being granted just a short-term
entertainment licence has won its battle for a full term.
Mr Gs nightclub in the lower precinct was on a probationary period after council
chiefs decided to award them just a three month licence back in February, due to
environmental health objections.
That period has now expired and the club was back before the Licensing Panel on
Thursday when it was granted a further nine months to make up the full years
licence.
Problems began when toilets at the club periodically overflowed and ran into the
newspaper and sweets kiosk below the club, causing thousands of pounds worth of stock
damage.
When the clubs licence came up for renewal in February Coventrys
environmental health director Howard Farrand contested it, but yesterday there were no
objections to the granting of the remainder of the term.
Coventry Licensing officer Lauren Kennedy says the award of the licence was
straightforward.
"It was approved because in the three month period there have been no further
problems with the toilets.
"There were no objections to us giving them a further nine months licence and the
issue seems to have been resolved," she said.
Kevin Jones, whose family owns the Hamilton News kiosk, which is below the club, is
content that the problem is over.
He said:
"We do not know what they have done but it seems to have worked and we have not
had any leakage into the shop for a long time.
"We never wanted the nightclub to lose their licence we just needed to get the
problem sorted and that has now been done."
Licensing officers also adjourned a bid to open a jazz club in the lower Holyhead Road
at Thursdays hearing.
Joseph Haggarty had hoped to open The Venue later this year but this now
looks uncertain after his applications was delayed for the third time.
Coventry Licensing Officer Lauren Kennedy said the police had objected to the proposal.
She said:
"This one had been adjourned several times because the police are objecting
because they are concerned with the hours that have been applied for.
"They are setting up a meeting between the police and the applicant but this has
not happened yet. However, I dont think it is delaying the project as the place is
nowhere near ready."
