MAR 01] SPON END FORUM NEWS OSCA Rises To Save Historic Part Of Coventry
 Residents
and traders in a historic part of the city have joined forces to save
the area from "developers and Coventry City Council". People
living in Spon End and Broomfield Place are so worried about the
threat to the medieval area that they have formed the Old Spon
          Community Association (OSCA). The
catalyst for the action was the threat to demolish Stanley Terrace to
widen Allesley Old Road to make way for a bus showcase scheme. Residents
in the stretch of road that will be affected fear they might be choked
by growing traffic in the area, as Spon End and the Butts could be
designated the main route into the city from the south instead of
          Holyhead Road. They
are also worried that the development of the Butts stadium by Coventry
Rugby Club could lead to further problems in the area. An
alliance of groups calling for greater consideration of the area’s
heritage is to be launched in the next few days. The
Save Old Spon campaign will include Spon End Red Brick, Spon End
Estate Residents Association, Spon End Building Preservation Trust,
Chapelfields Residents Association, Allesley Park Residents
Association and the Coventry Watchmakers Project. Colin
Walker, chair of the Spon End Forum, welcomed the new group. He said:
            “This
was the only part of the area that was not represented by an
organised group. We welcome them to the Spon End Forum and will of
course support this new group in whatever way we can.“There
are a lot of issues coming to a head in this part of the area and it
            will be a busy time."
