        Prince Charles Opens Midlands Charity HQToday
        HRH The Prince Of Wales will visit he international development charity, Intermediate
        Technology at its new headquarters in Warwickshire. 
        Intermediate technology is an international Development organisation working in the
        Third World to build the technical skills of poor people, enabling them to work themselves
        out of poverty. 
        His Royal Highness will rename the site The Schumacher Centre for Technology and
        Development. He will also tour an exhibition which illustrates how the
        charitys work increases peoples income, improves their lives and helps them
        protect the environment. Practical hands on demonstrations will show the
        technologies involved. 
        Chris Underhill, Intermediate Technologys Chief Executive said of the visit,  
        
          "I am delighted that His Royal Highness is taking time out of busy schedule to
          show his continuing support for the organisation. He became our Patron in 1980 and has
          been an excellent advocate of our work in the intervening years. He will be opening The
          Schumacher Centre for Technology and Development which will become a visual expression of
          the role that appropriate technology can play in developing countries." 
         
        Over the next ten years the Centre will become an international focus for public and
        specialist interest in appropriate technology. It will also become a forum to nurture
        cutting edge ideas on sustainable development. 
        NOTES
        The demonstrations will include the following: 
        A section of a ferro-cement roof that Maasai women in Kenya
        build to suit their increasingly sedentary way of life. The demonstration illustrates how
        the women work with Intermediate Technology to improve their housing and water shortage
        through the development and application of appropriate building technologies. 
        An illustration of indoor smoke pollution and Intermediate
        Technologys Household Health Project. His Royal Highness will be invited to test the
        equipment used to monitor smoke levels generated by the Kenyan wood burning stoves
        (traditional and improved). 
        His Royal Highness will also have an opportunity to view
        the charitys work with solar lanterns. 
        His Royal Highness will be shown a hive being used in
        Zimbabwe to improve bee keeping and honey production.
