        NEWS Worcester (10) 22  Coventry (7) 7
 [ALLIED DUNBAR PREMIERSHIP TWO]
As predicted, much-troubled Coventry fell to defeat in the opening
match of the new season, but there was much to give heart to new chairman Keith
Fairbrother. The former England prop forward, who leads a consortium
which took control of the club after it called in the Receiver, said:
"You have to remember we did not have a squad of
players last Friday. The lads have worked together for just a few days. Worcester, who
many say are favourites to win this division, have been together for three months. "If we played this match again in a month's time, I am
convinced we would win it." In fact Coventry led the match after half an hour.
Worcester took the lead in the 16th minute when their top try scorer from last season Nick
Baxter scored in the corner. But Andy Smallwood struck back for 'Cov' when he sprinted
into open space in the Worcester 22 and raced over unchallenged. Coventry's new fly half
Steve Gough converted and the men in blue and white were 7-5 ahead. But Worcester reopened their lead when Richard Tomlinson
scored to give them a 10-7 half time lead. The home side scored twice more in the second period with
tries from Richard Denhardt, the former Moseley skipper and scrum half Bruce Fenley added
another. Le Bas converted the first try. ALLIED
