Peregrine FalconThe nests of more than 60 rare breeding birds were plundered last year, according to new RSPB figures. Nest robberies, by egg thieves and bird of prey collectors, target some of the UK's rarest breeding birds and in 1998 such robberies included the nests of 25 peregrines, seven goshawks, six merlins, six choughs, four ospreys, two whitetailed eagles and one golden oriole.   MORE

Which bird will be the UK's number one feathered friend in gardens this winter? Families throughout West Midlands are invited to take part in what could be the biggest bird-count of its kind. The Big Garden Birdwatch, run by the YOC, the RSPB's junior membership, and supported by Tesco Stores, takes place over the weekend of 30 an 31 January.   MORE
