[16 AUG 00] RUGBY UNITED (VS RUGBY) NEWS
New Players, New Season, New Name For VS

It is not just a case of a few new players, the team at Butlin Road is now playing under the new name of Rugby United.

The former VS Rugby, whose claim to fame was their 1983 FA Vase victory, has lost its Valley Sports, or VS, tag which caused a furore in the town at the end of last season.

The name was a throwback to their old ground in the New Bilton area, known to many as the Happy Valley.

Even though the club moved across town to Butlin Road in Eastlands, they kept the name until this summer.

But now they are known by a new name and the team gets ready to kick off in Dr Martins Western Division, mainly with clubs from the West Midlands and West Country.

VS had endured a season in the south and east league which saw them travelling down to Kent and the Isle of Wight, and other than a few Northamptonshire teams, they had hardly any local games.

Their first game in the new season is away against Bromsgrove on the opening day next Saturday (19 August), followed by Bilston and Evesham.

But it won't be until December when they get big derby games at home with Atherstone United visiting on 9 December and Racing Club Warwick on Boxing Day.

Other local sides in the division include Solihull Borough, Bedworth United and Hinckley United.

In the last few weeks, the club has signed Robbie Beard from Bedworth and Nigel Niblett from Gloucester.

But United have lost Lee Ross in a dispute over contracts. He was their first contract player for two years when he signed last season.

The club has another team Rugby AFC which will play in a lower league against the likes of Leamington Town, Leamington Hibernia, Kenilworth Wardens and Rugby Town (which is unconnected with United).

New facilities are set to be built at the Butlin Road club, which aims to be in the conference within five years, and the name VS Rugby will be incorporated somewhere in the new facilities.
