[DR MARTENS LEAGUE MIDLAND DIVISION]

This was never going to be VS Rugby’s day. Keeper Ian Ladkin was taken ill on the way to the game and centre-half Richard Hamer had to go in goal.

The defender did keep out a 30-yard strike from forward Rob Smith in the 17th minutes and managed to maintain a clean sheet until half time.

He was beaten in the 28th minute when Mark Dearlove headed in but the referee had spotted some pushing a ruled out the effort.

The best VS chnce of the half game 10 minutes from the interval when Ashley Warner, back after recent hamstring trouble, forced a fine save out of Jim Arnold.

United finally made their superiority tell just five minutes after the re-start when ross knight’s low shot came back off a post and fell kindly for Lee Both who was able to convert from just a couple of yards out.

Paul Brighton added the second after 69 minutes when he scored at the second attempt after his first effort had been saved by Hamer.

Burton then made certain of victory five minutes later, turning home a cross from Adam Nicholls.

Lee Lavery almost grabbed a consolation near the end but it was not to be and VS’s troubles continue
