A last minute winner ended
Rugby’s run of six straight defeats.
The scorer was the substitute Danny Finlay. VS defender Danny Green thumped a long kick
upfield, Paul John won the aerial challenge and the ball fell to Finley who headed into
the net.
It was a welcome reward for a hardworking, no frills display by VS who now go into the
New Year on an optimistic note.
Ashley Warner gave Rugby the lead in the 39th minute from Scott
Machin’s pass and they would have been further ahead but for some excellent
goalkeeping by Ian Pledger.
VS looked in trouble however when Stamford equalised in the 67th minute. Nathan Bailey
fired a low shot past the goalkeeper.
