EVENT James son of James
DATE Tuesday 26 February to Saturday 1 March 2008, 7.30pm
Performed by Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre.
James son of James is a story of accidental heroism, hero worship, sadness, love, power, betrayal and revenge, told through dance, theatre, live song, original music and outrageous humour by eleven extraordinary, international performers.
James returns home for his father's funeral having been away for eleven years. He is late and misses the burial. He becomes embroiled in the lives of ten characters: the local politician, his wife and son, the policeman and his wife, a farmer, a doctor, a merchant, his daughter and a young woman from the East. His arrival awakens the potential for compassion and kindness among the villagers of this small rural Irish community. Yet, over time, this hope turns sour, as James becomes the victim of local rivalries, jealousies and fear.
Fabulous Beast exploded onto the Irish arts scene in 1997, led by one of Ireland's most talented, daring and charismatic contemporary artists, Michael Keegan-Dolan. His ability to fuse the visual immediacy of dance with the persuasive and powerful narrative of theatre has won Fabulous Beast huge critical acclaim.

The music that accompanies the dances are usually played on the bombarde and biniou-koz (breton bagpipes) or can be sung in the style of kan ha diskhan.
Dances from Central France are usually danced in couples and include the simple two and three time bouree through to the more complex mazurka. The music that accompanies the dances are usually played on the vielle a roue (hurdy gurdy), cornemuses (bagpipes) and accordeon diatonique.

EVENT The Big Ballet
DATE Tuesday 22 April 2008
Russia’s alternative ballet company, The Big Ballet - comprising 16 female dancers each weighing a strict minimum of 17 Stone and a combined average of 20 Stone - will be performing at the Belgrade Theatre as part of a tour of 65 UK theatres.
The Big Ballet hails from Perm, a beautiful city in Russia’s Ural Mountain range, also home to two of ballet’s pre-eminent geniuses, Peter I Tchaikovsky and Serge Diaghlev. Formed to challenge social standards in a world where slenderness and beauty seems obsessive, The Big Ballet dancers courageously and imposingly, prove that grace, elegance, charisma and nimbleness are not the sole preserve of the ‘thin’ and proudly present their voluptuous, yet surprisingly sinuous and flexible, figures.
