| EVENT | THE SHAPE OF THINGS |
|---|---|
| DATE | Saturday 22 to Saturday 29 March 2008 |
| By Neil Labute. How far would you go for love? Or for art? What would you be willing to change? What price might you be willing to pay? Set in the present day in a liberal arts college in a conservative Midwest town in the USA, The Shape of Things focuses on the lives of four young students who become romantically and emotionally involved with each other. One of them drifts into an ever-changing relationship with an art major while his best friends' engagement crumbles. This unleashes a drama that peels back the skin of two modern-day relationships, exposing the raw meat and gristle that lies beneath. Author and American film director Neil Labute’s play was premiered in 2001 at the Almeida Theatre in London where it received considerable critical acclaim. It was made into a film starring Rachel Weisz and Paul Rudd in 2003. Darren Scott directs this powerful and challenging examination of art, manipulation and love. Is seduction an art? The play contains strong language. |

| EVENT | Once a Catholic |
| DATE | Wednesday 26 March to Saturday 5 April 2008 |
| By Mary O'Malley. Once a Catholic - always a Catholic! Or so they’d have us believe... But Mary O’Malley’s hilarious comedy of life in a 1950s London convent puts that claim on the line. The play follows the exploits of class 5a at the Convent of Our Lady of Fatima grammar school during their O Levels. The girls - including innocent Mary Mooney, saucy Mary McGinty and pert Mary Gallagher - encounter nuns, boys and Father Mullarkey and cope with confused sermons about limbo, unforgiving sex education lessons and the temptations of Elvis Presley. Bombarded by saints, sin and suffering, the girls battle their way through adolescence with a stubborn resolve not to give in. But can they make it through the year with their regulation underwear and their sanity intact? A most telling and funny piece of theatre, Once a Catholic casts a caustic eye on the young girls’ growing awareness of the world and their own sexuality. In an environment where only Hell and Damnation await sinful thoughts, it’s teen spirit versus the nuns. The play contains some strong language. |
